The Tiny Seed
The Antelopes loved learning all about flowers in our Tiny Seed topic.
The Antelopes enjoyed retelling the story of the Tiny Seed by Eric Carle at our Small Word area.
After looking at the story a few times, we made a leaflet explaining how the tiny seed can keep safe.
We also did some group writing, working together to retell the story. The Antelopes tried hard to sound out all the words.
We spent several days making our own version of the cover of The Tiny Seed. First we splatter painted a background, then we painted a sheet of paper with a range of green paints. Next we cut out a stem and leaves from our green paper, and stuck them onto our splattered background. Finally, we stuck on the Title and wrote on our name, before sticking on some tissue paper petals!
Shifting our focus to plants, the Antelopes had lots of fun doing activities using real flowers and vegetables. We identified words labelling plant parts in books, then wrote our own labels to go on a plant.
We tried matching vegetables to their seeds, and tasted some real veggies!
We had a great time going on the school field to pick some plants. We arranged them in a laminating sheet and laminated them, creating easy pressed flower art!
After learning lots about how to look after plants, we each planted a sunflower seed, and loved watching them grow!
After planting our own seeds, we sequenced the stages in the life-cycle of a sunflower, and stuck everything together to make lovely pull-apart life-cycle strips!
The Antelopes made some beautiful flower art during our Tiny Seed topic! We made paper flowers...
...painted paper tulips in the style of Eric Carle...
... crayon, pastel, and painted sunflowers...
... flowers using parts of real flowers...
... flowers using buttons, pipe cleaners, feathers, and lolly sticks...
... flowers using natural objects...
... and flowers using 2D shapes.
The Antelopes also made lots of floral models in construction.
We made mobilo fowers...
... hexabit flowers...
... Knex flowers...
... and Octon flowers.
The Antelopes also made some flower pots for their paper flower...
... and something to protect the sunflower seedlings from the pesky crow that kept trying to peck our plants!
In role-play the Antelopes practised wrapping bunches of flowers for the customers at the flower shop. Some of the Antelopes teachers received many bunches of beautifully wrapped flowers!
